Solutions

Despite the detrimental impact of light pollution, very practical solutions exist that can be used to combat the problem (Gaston et. al.) Many of these solutions are relatively easy to implement, and can yield many positive benefits. These include:

Increasing natural unlit areas

Limiting light intensity

Using More Efficient Light Fixtures

Only using lights when they are actually needed

Some of these solutions can be easily implemented on a small scale by individuals. The added bonus is that using less light, and using it more efficiently, can not only help ecosystems, but reduce energy and monetary costs. Many programs have already been put in place to help limit light pollution, such as Toronto’s Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP), which is aimed at bird conservation (Holker).

The International Dark Sky Association is a great resource for further information on light pollution, as well as what everyone can do to combat the issue.
